Metal Refining Industry
The requirement for this project was to build a refining kettle with a 33% greater capacity. Due to the extreme operating conditions of such a component, its thermal stresses needed to be considered as well as its mechanical stresses before the design could be considered acceptable. The first step of the project involved building a Finite Element Analysis “virtual” prototype and applying thermal boundary conditions to it.
A thermal analysis of the prototype was then conducted which resulted in the temperature gradients being calculated in the kettle. This information was then used as an input into a mechanical analysis of the fully loaded kettle to obtain the combined thermal and mechanical stresses.
