Pipe-in-Pipe Bulkhead Strain Based Analysis

This project consisted of a subsea pipeline bulkhead that needed to be analysed in accordance with ASME VIII. The FEA team were required to calculate the plastic strains in the component so a detailed, non-linear material was applied and geometry analysis techniques were used and the plastic strains were subsequently analysed.

Limit-state design principles allowed the bulkhead and adjacent pipelines to be optimised beyond the allowable stress criteria. The integrity of the structure was assessed by incrementally increasing the operational loads until plastic failure developed and a margin of safety was established. The final design underwent successful hydraulic testing and the same approach has been used on a series of similar designs.
