Seaway Phoenix

Conversion of existing pipe lay vessel to cable lay.

MAATS Tech have, for the second time, carried out conversion engineering on the Seaway Phoenix.

The original conversion and installation of two carousels was completed by MAATS in 2006  when the vessel was originally known as the Pertinacia with the vessel then being successfully chartered until 2018 when it was cold stacked.

Subsea 7 ordered the conversion and modification of the vessels equipment for cable lay with the work scope commencing in Qtr 1 2021.


MAATS supplied the following services and carried out installation at Remontowa Shipyard in Poland.

  • Upgrade of 2 under deck carousels from 1000Te and 1600Te to 2000Te capacity.
  • Vessel Conversion/detail design drawings
  • Inclination test and stability book
  • FEA of designs and interaction of existing and new components for increased loading and vessel accelerations
  • Survey of vessel prior to design and installation works proceeding
  • Replacement of control system with latest technology
  • Installation works, including commissioning and testing
